songsmithing

I want to write you songs. Specifically you.

Songs are a quick and personal way of connecting with folks and I want to connect with my audience in an even more personal way. My SongSmith service can provide you with an original song written just for you or someone you love. Here’s what you do:

  • You commission me to write a song for you (or someone you love) by sending me an email.
  • I write and record an original song, based off of your suggestions and information, and send it off to you.
  • You can then enjoy for yourself, give as a present, or use to mark a special occasion or event.

What do you get? A one-of-a-kind, unique-to-you original song to enjoy and/or gift.

What do I get? A free song idea, a puzzle to figure out, and, eventually, a cool collection of original songs about people I, quite possibly, hardly know.

I collect a small fee for my time and retain all rights to the song, of course. I can also offer more boutique-y offers—EPs, album artwork, etc.—for any special negotiated requests. Heck: think up anything. How about a song about your entire life? How about something aimed at your mortal enemy? Something about your hometown?  Whatever you can think of.

The fee for 1 song would be $250. I can offer a more elaborate, many-tracked version of a song–something with more instrumentation and arrangement for a different negotiated fee.I would need at least a month to get the song to you. Special requests will take longer.

Included below are some testimonials from a test-run of the service, I offered earlier this year. Please email me with any questions or requests.

From Brian Baughan, on the song “Tonight’s The Start of Everything”:

“Some people are just endless founts of great song ideas. That’s Ben, ever since I’ve known him. When I heard recently that he was soliciting inspiration from friends and strangers, I jumped on it. The song he gave me and my significant other is what so many of us want: a treasured moment in life, set to music.

With songs, we all have our sentimental favorites. This is a new path one songwriter has taken on intentionally producing those kinds of songs. For me, he’s delivered.”

From Allison Connett, on the song “When The Wind Hits the Water”:

“Probably the best gift I’ve ever given–This summer my husband turned "the big Four Oh”.  To mark the occasion I pulled out all the stops and threw a huge 70s-themed party with eighty of our closest friends and family (!).  I asked Ben to write a song in honor of him.  The process of acquiring the song was super easy.  I sent Ben one paragraph describing who Tom is, the things I love and admire about him, what makes him special, etc. And then Ben turned it into art!  The work as a whole was amazing, breathtaking.  I was teary-eyed and speechless.

Tom was incredibly moved by the song and the gesture of love behind it.  Countless people came up to me afterwards to ask about the song and who wrote it and to say how much they liked it.  It was by far and away my favorite part of the evening.

Someone once told me that we are given very few moments in life to publicly honor the people we love and cherish; and that when those opportunities present themselves we should take them.  We should look for ways to do so because life is short.  That’s what this song was for me…an opportunity to give someone I love a one-of-a-kind gift that said to him and everyone else…this person is special.“

From Mike Morelli, on "You Are The You”:

“I had just lost one of my brothers and was having a really hard time with it. I sent Ben an email telling him I had just read his post and wanted to see if he could craft a tune for me to remember my brother. Almost immediately I heard back from him and he said he would be honored to do this for me. He asked me to send him pictures of my brother, tell him some stories about Chris…good times we shared….anything that he could use to help weave a song. I remember sending him information as he requested as well as a cool line I had heard: "and one day too, I shall walk among the stars."

After several weeks, I received an email from Ben stating that he had completed a song and was going to send it to me. I opened the email containing the song, "You are the You”, and began listening it. I cried my way through listening to Ben sing about how now with every song I hear, Chris will be the “you” in the song. My favorite line in the song is where he took the idea I sent him about the stars and sings, “I’ve never been so sure about each and every star.”  He puts it so beautifully.

This gift Ben gave me truly is one of the nicest, if not the nicest gift I have ever received. I listen to the song often and think about my brother. Ben’s ability to create something so beautiful out of such little information is nothing short of amazing. I look forward to every new song he composes.“
